Cow Eyeball!

 I volunteered to help in Kaylynn's classroom today to dissect a cow eyeball.  I was in for more than I realized - I had to do all the cutting!  A local eye doctor talked us parents through what we would be doing to start off.

Then the kids came out and she quizzed them on all the parts of the eye.  When they realized she was giving candy for correct responses all the hands went up!

 Here is the eyeball I am about to cut into!

 Kaylynn told me last night that this was going to be disgusting and she did not want to touch it.

 That didn't last long! 

 All three girls in my group dug right in (literally)!  They were absolutely fascinated and asked me to keep cutting more and more so they could look deeper into the different parts of the eye.  We cut off the cornea first and then cut through the vitreous body (gooey gel that would squirt you if you were not careful!) and took the lens out.  After they bounced the lens like a bouncy ball and magnified words with it we cut that apart and saw all the different "eye rings" which are just like tree rings and can tell how old the animal was.  We also saw the optic nerve, the iris, the pupil and even the reflector - which humans don't have but grazing animals do.  It was all very cool and I was glad I got to help!
