Once we got to the Black Hills our first stop was to Wind Cave National Park. This is a picture of the hole where they first discovered it back in 1881. They have since discovered about 125 miles of cave, which is the fourth largest in the world. The only spelunking we got to do was a guided tour that brought us down 200 feet below ground to a cool and constant 53 degrees. It was pretty interesting.
Of course we saw the standard wildlife...buffalo, deer, prairie dogs, wild turkey. According to Cory, this buffalo was just about to charge right after I took this photo (from the car window!).
We were also lucky enough to see two coyotes. They spooked out a deer when they were running up the hillside, but they didn't go take it down. We thought that would make a better picture, but no such luck.
We then drove up Needles Hwy to Sylvan Lake. It was a great drive and the lake was beautiful to hike around.
Finally, we made the required stop in at Mount Rushmore. Here is Cory doing his best "Presidential Pose".
We got to get together with some friends for lunch in Rapid City and stayed at some great Bed and Breakfasts. It was a fun trip and we are looking forward to taking K back in a few years.
